ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with words like powerful, influential, experienced, and responsible. These words still hold true, but their meaning has changed: C-Suite executives are powerful, not because of the control they have, but because they have the power to help others see the things they see and act accordingly. There is no time or space in the C-Suite to be functional partisans. That most executives come from a functional background is clear, but when they hit the C-Suite, everything changes. In summary, C-Suite executives need to devolve all management activities to their people and to reposition their leadership focus from inside-out to outside-in. The C-Suite should be scanning developments in society, the economy and industry, and regulations. They should also track customer requirements, technology, competitors, suppliers, and the business environment. The chapter provides some ideas about relatively small and safe changes.
