ABSTRACT

The pace of technological change is increasing in two ways: the creation of new technology and the adoption of new technology. Most people are aware of Moore’s Law, which is loosely defined as information technology circuitry that fits into a given space doubles every 24 months, implying that the cost of information technology halves every two years. Artificial Intelligence is another technology that had to wait for big data techniques amongst others. The economy is deeply affected by IT, over and above the deflationary effects of technology. Disposing of technology is also a major environmental problem with e-waste, or techno-trash, amounting to 5% of all solid waste. John Hagel also said that technology escalates local developments to have global impacts. Competition, speed, connectedness, start-ups punching above their weight, and other technology-enabled forces will change the way large organizations operate. Erik Brynjolfsson suggests that organizations achieve “scale without mass.”
