ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the adaptations of three heads (Chris, James and Raymond) to the new demands being made upon them. Hill illustrates the 'all-embracing nature of the primary head's role' from the DES Conditions of Employment of Head Teachers, which 'charts an awesome set of responsibilities and duties'. In practice, as there is only six full-time teaching staff sharing curriculum responsibility, some of the teachers coordinate for more than one curricular area, and Chris is often included in developing policy as part of the senior management team. The school was open to the community, parents, researchers, teachers from other schools and international visitors. As for policies coming into the school, much of James's work was devoted to ensuring that both he and the teachers complied with the Government's policies regarding management, curriculum and assessment. James involves himself in planning with the teachers and leads INSET sessions on aspects of curriculum development.
