ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews philosophical positions of computational theory of mind and its significance for culture. Computational theory of mind is a philosophical stance that elaborates on the notion of the mind as a machine that can perform functional tasks. The mind as a machine is a metaphor that builds into fundamental standards of mentality and thought. The physical realization of the mind as a computer details the computational level of the mind. The computational level of the mind contributes to the generation of mental property of the cultural system. Cultural patterns of social thought comprise the emergent phenomena of the mind at the cultural level of the organized system.
