ABSTRACT

Machine functionalism describes the conceptualization of the mind as a machine and its implications for philosophy of mind. The mind as a machine metaphor has introduced a spectrum of notions of the multiple realizability of the mind across possible worlds. The multiple realizations of the mind imply that the functional role of the mind is conserved across physical realizers. The realization of the mind as a computing machine expands the functional role of the mind into the cultural sphere. The automated production of mental content from the computing machine is fundamental to cultural production. Exploration into the cultural mind as a cultural computing machine entails the parts and particulars of the mind as a causal system for the cultural level as a physical system in the physical world. Broadening the conceptualization of the functional role of minds and machines into the culture sphere contributes to understanding of the fundamental nature of the mind in the world.
