ABSTRACT

Obviously, insects and human societies have interacted in a variety of ways, both positive and negative. Insects contribute to essential processes in their native ecosystems. Insect abundance is regulated by the availability of suitable food resources and by predators, parasites and pathogens. Herbivore outbreaks typically are triggered by disturbances that stress abundant plants and make them more vulnerable to herbivorous insects. Crop breeding for better taste or faster growth has come at the expense of reduced plant defensive chemicals, thereby removing a second major regulating mechanism. Sustainable options for living with insects involve emphasis on preventative measures, rather than insecticides. Elimination of conducive conditions around human habitations, such as practicing good sanitation, maintaining window and door screens, emptying water-holding containers that may breed mosquitoes and planting pest-resistant landscaping, will reduce most household and neighborhood pest problems.
