ABSTRACT

The fifth chapter examines the effect of the Spanish Revolution on gender relations, and the transatlantic anarchist response. It looks at the work of Emma Goldman for the anarchist women’s organisation Mujeres Libres, as well as transatlantic anarchists who became milicianas in Spain. It assesses the consequences of hegemonic masculinity in the anarchist movement, particularly the ‘virile syndicalism’ of the IWW, and how this manifested itself in the wartime context of Spain. The chapter also looks at childhood and youth, and how anarchists in both Spain and abroad used children for propaganda purposes, ignoring their contribution to the struggle against fascism.
