ABSTRACT

In this opening chapter of a book on integrated theory in criminology, the reader is introduced to the idea of theoretical integration and the importance it holds for the field of criminology. Several factors currently standing in the way of integrated theory in the field of criminology are discussed, along with some possible solutions. One solution is to incorporate insights from Karl Popper’s and Thomas Kuhn’s philosophy of science to integrate the deductive and inductive approaches to scientific inquiry advocated by each, respectively. The book’s overall purpose and a brief synopsis of the three remaining chapters in Part I of this book are briefly described.
