ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines a theory of poverty. It presents the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which are indicative of the recent attention global poverty has received and point to the hope of eradicating it completely in the not-too-distant future. The book focuses on the mental models that are most likely to foster and support the new, innovative approaches to global poverty which are needed if the Sustainable Development Goals’ promises are to be realized. It examines critiques of these approaches as well as some of the dubious effects of those approaches on eradicating poverty. The book argues that the term “corporate social responsibility”, which is widely cited, is often equated with charity. It also outlines how institutions and institutional thinking, Western-developed corporate global mindsets, and/or organizationally dominant logic block possibilities for riskier but worthwhile ventures.
