ABSTRACT
Many people in the developed world would like to help individuals like Jane escape from their problems and live more prosperous and peaceful lives. Several multinational organizations are dedicated to doing just that by facilitating economic development at the base of the pyramid. An analysis of some of the poverty reduction strategies implemented by these multinational organizations is instructive. As an organization favoring free trade, the World Trade Organization (WTO) supports trade liberalization as a significant force in long-run poverty alleviation since free trade results in economic growth. The chapter deals with the strategies of the United Nations (UN) and explores what the World Bank, International Monetary Fund , and the WTO are doing to reduce global poverty. Founded in 1945, the UN is an international organization comprised of 192 member states. Its stated purpose is to facilitate cooperation in the realms of international security, law, and social and economic development.
