ABSTRACT

The persistence of cataloging backlogs in academic libraries is prompting many to reexamine their technical services routines. At the University of Oregon, FastCat was employed as a means of increasing the cataloging output without increasing staff. Procedures and criteria used by Acquisition Department staff to catalog approximately one third of incoming receipts are detailed. Successful implementation resulted from a well managed change process, the evolutionary rather than revolutionary nature of the change, the innovation of batch process series authority control, and the commitment of the staff to the goals of the project. Suggestions for further improvements are presented.
