ABSTRACT

Knowledge can be described as a “dynamic collection of information and skills” and wisdom as a combination of knowledge plus experience and good judgement. Arts managers in Ireland came up with the following list of skills they needed to do their job: ability to express confidence and to be decisive, Ability to develop and maintain networks and formal channels of communication with the outside world and knowledge of local, national and international structures. These are mainly pragmatic skills which can be gained through formal learning and experience. And experience is a good teacher. J. Pfeffer and R. I. Sutton say that wisdom means striking a balance between arrogance and insecurity. This attitude enables people to act on their present knowledge while doubting what they know. A word that has permeated the world of recruitment and training is “competency”.
