ABSTRACT

World leading research by Australia’s Entertainment Assist and Victoria University found that although the majority of Australian entertainment industry workers express an overwhelming passion for their creative work, there is a powerful, negative culture within the industry and not surprisingly, the result was high levels of mental health problems and suicidality. The negative culture includes a toxic, bruising work environment; extreme competition; bullying; sexual assault; and sexism and racism. A US organisation with the ambition to create, study and recognise great workplaces called Great Place to Work says that from the employees’ perspective, great workplaces are those where they trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do and enjoy the people they work with. Trust is a defining principle created when people are respected and treated fairly, managers are credible and there’s pride and authentic connection between people.
