ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the growth of globalization based on the evolution of media as the integral driver of globalization. It divides the history of media into five major eras and discusses the major role of media in the globalization processes: (1) oral communication era until the 1450s, (2) written communication era until the 1870s, (3) electronic communication era until the 1950s, (4) digital communication era until the 2000s, and (5) digital platform and media convergence era starting around 2007. This is mainly based on the invention of new media technologies that changed the major socio-cultural milieu around these particular historical points, which means that this chapter addresses the nexus of media and globalization by focusing on the implications of the invention of new technologies.
