ABSTRACT

The nation-states have also continued to support media and cultural industries, and, in particular, in the era of digital platforms, the nexus between the state and platform owners has substantially increased. By discussing the inseparable complex between the nation-state and digital platforms, this chapter provides some discussions on the ways in which the nation-states function in constructing platform empires. It analyzes the ways in which nation-states have lost their supreme authority, even partially, in several major fields, including economy and culture. It explains why the nation-states have experienced some decline in their absolute authorities. However, this chapter mainly discusses the reasons why nation-states continue to function as a meaningful unit in both national politics and economy in the 21st century.
