ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses film as one of the most globalization cultural product as global citizens easily enjoy films produced in other countries, in particular Hollywood. It explains why Hollywood majors' dominant position in the global film markets constitutes a threat to the distinctiveness of national cultures and how many non-Western countries have attempted to protect, develop, and furthermore, expand their global reach over the past several decades. By comparing and contrasting Hollywood and non-Western cinema, this chapter crucially explains the power relationship between Hollywood films and non-Western films as the relationship between Hollywood and emerging film markets should be comprehended to determine cultural globalization in the context of broader socio-economic milieu.
