ABSTRACT

This chapter acknowledges the way that technology has shaped our discipline through the lens of cyberbehaviours and it is through this lens that we explore the impact of technology and how it is this perspective gives a more potent understanding of technologies impact and the emerging realities of contemporary work. We do this by setting a broad canvass by setting a context that reflects a digital saturated age that gives us a digital everywhereness and digital distractions that best describe the world that we live in. This includes a discussion on whether there is an emerging and growing counter-culture that offers the mindfulness use of technology and what this means for work stress research. This chapter explores a range of technologies and what it means when we discuss the synergetic relationship between individuals and machines. It points to changing styles of leadership and the need to rethink the meanings given to concepts like collaboration, partnership and management when thinking about the machine-human relationship. We then take a moment to explore what this all means for work stress research. We broaden this discussion to explore whether the technology industry is at risk by acknowledging that research should not underestimate issues like privacy, ethics, and sustainability. We then end the chapter by pointing to how technology and cyberbehaviours are shaping and giving new directions for research.
