ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the inception and continued existence of political debates in the Nigerian democratic system of government. Since political debates have been identified as the most important tool in political campaigning, it investigates the importance of political debates in the Nigerian electoral cycle by providing a holistic view of its past, present, and future. It achieves this by analysing the processes involved in organising political debates in Nigeria, the roles of politicians, media, and the electorate since inception and the implications of their roles on the relevance of political debates. The chapter concludes by proffering solutions to the values attached to the political debating culture in Nigeria.
