ABSTRACT

John Barton was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he directed and acted in many classical productions, eventually becoming a don at King’s College. He then co-founded the Royal Shakespeare Company with Peter Hall, where he directed for over forty years. In his many masterclasses with the OSC, Mr Barton has helped our actors find the acting clues in Shakespeare’s texts by working Sonnets 29 (also found in F. Murray Abraham’s chapter), 15, 148, 116, 151, 129 (also worked on by Cicely Berry), and 144, with special focus on antithesis, line endings, rhyme, and storyline. Mr Barton was recipient of the Sam Wanamaker Prize and the OSC’s Oxford Prize.
