ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the design and participatory issues of certification within a context. It follows that the design considerations of a certification programme should satisfy these goals; as well as ensuring that the environmental level of performance set by the programme’s standards is met. The design issues to consider in certification can be divided into three groups: the importance of environmental management systems at the Local Forest Management Unit (LFMU) level; accreditation; and the certification body. BS 7750 is designed to enable any organization to establish an effective management system as a foundation for sound environmental performance. It is only when both the LFMU and certification body come to grips with this reality that an effective environmental management system can be designed to meet the requirements of quality forestry.
