ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to introduce member service roles, and to stress the observer’s role so that teams can improve their performance. It presents the service roles of various team members such as participant, leader, recorder, observer, resource person, timekeeper, and trainer. The chapter summarizes the responsibilities of participant, leader, recorder, observer, and timekeeper. It also provides teamwork process factors that need to be considered while observing the team. Some of the process factors include: spontaneity of participation, balanced participation, emotional atmosphere, dependence on the discussion leader, clarity of tasks and goals, quality of listening, and factors that blocked progress toward the goal.
