ABSTRACT

Unity Environmental helps its New York City clients achieve their waste reduction goals. Its affiliate company, V. Ponte and Sons, Inc., has been in the recycling business since it was founded in 1919, paying local businesses and office buildings for their waste paper. Unity sells its waste paper hauls to competitors’ mills as well as its own paper mill, usually on an individual basis. It picks up its clients’ waste paper and corrugated cardboard and delivers it straight to the mills. Eliminating the plastic liner discourages people from throwing anything but recyclables in the bin. Employees must get up and throw out real garbage in a centrally located container. Even the residential market is gravitating toward collecting and recycling 100 percent of all waste paper. Paper mills emit fewer toxins, use less energy and water, and are much easier on the overall environment when using recycled fiber as raw material.
