ABSTRACT

One of the objectives of lowland development in South East Asia is to increase the food production in order to have a balance with the population growth. The agricultural land use in the South East Asia region is characterized by predominantly rice growing. The typical monsoon climate of Bangladesh, combined with deforestation in the uplands of the river watersheds, causes seasonal floods in at least 50% of the country. The water management systems are mainly for two purposes, i.e. flood control and agricultural development. The water management systems consist of field, tertiary, secondary and primary drains. Lowland development in the Philippines is mainly for urban, industrial, solid waste disposal and recreation. The reclamation of tidal lowlands in Indonesia has to create a suitable environment for agricultural development and settlement. The reclamation of tidal lowlands for agricultural development has been successfully carried out in various parts of the world for many centuries.
