ABSTRACT

Domestic conditions that for years have been negatively affecting the economy and threatening the loss of political control and the expectation of very hard times for the population have impelled Fidel Castro to become more involved in domestic affairs. Castro has outlined a series of measures, policies, and revolutionary behavioral norms indicating an intent to conduct a cautious, yet concrete “cultural revolution.” This cultural revolution is Castro’s attempt to straighten out the chaos within the Revolution. Within the Cuban context, the term, “political work,” entails the use of a series of measures aimed at the development of an altruistic and revolutionary conscience. These measures involve Party cadres persuading and pressuring the workers to attend political education classes and mass rallies, to do voluntary work, to show support for the Party’s positions. The entire political machinery of the Party, state, and mass organizations should be moving in the direction of translating Castro’s ideas into policies and directives.
