ABSTRACT

Helene Deutsch was beginning to realize the harm she had suffered as a result of her love for Herman Lieberman. They bickered during the trip, and she had regularly been seasick; on the voyage she remembered feeling it was their last holiday together. Even though Helene’s interest in studying at Munich was fully justified by its fame as a psychiatric center, it is probable that Lieberman had perceived it as a sign that she was slipping away from him, and therefore tried to display their relationship publicly. Poles who were culturally or educationally ambitious might go either to Vienna or Munich, but especially in Germany they would feel alienated and in need of each other’s support. Helene often went on walks or spent relaxed evenings with Reinhold; Munich was then as outstanding in the world of art as Vienna was in music.
