ABSTRACT
Data in the sociability-activities area are not as plentiful for students in the several kinds of residences other than fraternities and sororities. According to various personality indices, Greeks in comparison with other students typically have more self-confidence and are more self-assertive. Residences within a general classification can vary as to environmental characteristics as well as typical member-attributes. Some portion of selectivity is due to self-selectivity on the part of the student, often in terms of his assessment of the characteristics of the several residences. Residence groupings— particularly fraternities and sororities— are hardly passive recipients of self-selected members. It is possible that typical differences among students in different kinds of residences are due primarily, if not totally, to processes of selection rather than to changes resulting from influences of these groups upon their members. Heightening of initial residential differences does not occur invariably.
