ABSTRACT

The reason ostensibly given for objecting to corporations doing business in South Africa is that the corporations are in some way contributing to the continuation of apartheid. Apartheid violates human rights, and it is the concern for human rights that is supposed to motivate the protesting church groups. It is interesting to note, however, that although there are many resolutions against doing business in South Africa. One would have expected church groups seriously interested in the protection of human rights to be concerned about all such violations. A responsible recommendation that showed awareness of the nature of business activity would attempt to integrate the particular moral concern with the general purpose of the corporation and with the specific circumstances of the particular corporation. It is not impossible to think of sound reasons why the apartheid environment may not be a good one for further investment.
