ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the infrastructure and diverse stakeholders found in countries where there is some form of legalized sports gambling. Game or result integrity is an essential pillar of sporting contests, and one which fans and participants alike largely place high importance upon. Sporting contests are often distinguished from entertainment events by having uncertainty of outcome as a defining aspect. Government legislation can have major impacts on the sports gambling sector. Starting with horse racing and later with a broader range of sports, gambling has long been a source of tax revenues for governments where gambling, at least to some extent, is legal. Most major sporting leagues in countries where gambling is not legal or where it is very restricted have traditionally opposed expanded legalization of gambling.
