Sports Content Distribution

Broadcasting, Cable and OTTs
ByGeorge Foster, Norm O’Reilly, Antonio Dávila

This chapter focuses on decisions related to the sport content that is broadcast via television and online streaming around the world. Although television still is the primary medium of choice for broadcasting elite sport content, people are increasingly accessing this content via digital channels. The chapter highlights how broadcast decisions over time have become increasingly more complex and involve a greater number of stakeholders. Media revenues are a central pillar of many sporting leagues and sporting bodies. Deloitte provides a breakdown of the five major European soccer league revenues by category, including broadcast, game/match day, sponsorship and other commercial. One pillar of sports broadcasting becoming a major entertainment experience is having engaging personalities in the broadcast.
