ABSTRACT

A possibly apocryphal story has it that Woody Allen, asked how he would live his life again if reincarnated, answered that he would avoid seeing the film of The Magus. The film of The Collector was undistinguished, that of The Magus worse, but that made from The French Lieutenant’s Woman was from the start a different proposition. The script was written by Harold Pinter, who, besides being a playwright of great distinction, is also a writer of screenplays of notable brilliance and economy.
