ABSTRACT
The Wilsonian analysis had blamed war on the vice of “secret diplomacy” and assumed that “open covenants, openly arrived at” would prevent a repetition of disaster. The Members of the League undertake to respect and preserve as against external aggression the territorial integrity and existing political independence of all Members of the League. The only initial sign that German priorities had changed was in fact an act of peace and reconciliation, in that the Nazis ended the long-standing political and economic tensions between the Weimar Republic and Poland, and in January 1934 concluded a non-aggression pact. National Socialism was the doctrine of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, which developed out of the radical racist German Workers’ Party founded in 1919 by Anton Drexler, but was soon taken over and renamed by Adolf Hitler. The Nazis tried to create a new culture of nationalist mobilization, using all the most advanced instruments held out by modern technology.
