ABSTRACT

Children grow up. That is, those who survive the risks that are part of childhood and adolescence become adults who may be more or less prepared to help to raise the next generation and to lead productive lives. An implication of this flow is that applications of openness, respect, curiosity, and accountability (ORCA) with children and adolescents also work with adult children, only adjusted to their increasing maturity. Openness shows up in being willing to acknowledge and at least attempt to understand issues in ours and our children’s lives. Active parenting is a lifelong commitment. While particulars of parenting change as offspring grow and the circumstances of their lives change, the ORCA-Stance continues to hold us in humility with gratitude for the sacred lessons we have learned while parenting our kids.
