ABSTRACT

How does the ORCA-Stance impact supervision, especially when there is a power dynamic(s) in play? This chapter examines how openness shows up with supervisees and when both parties are swimming in their own reactions. How much does the supervisor disclose and in what circumstances, especially when boundaries can shift quickly? An example of a university school shooting is cited to illustrate this point. The chapter examines how to manage respect when a supervisor’s style is authoritative and when supervisees don’t respond well to that style. It also looks at the culture of feedback and recognition with millennials, in particular. The chapter also examines how curiosity and isomorphism intermingle as well as how the clinical setting impacts these relationships. Finally, a more complex part of supervision concerns whether accountability to power is present when ethical and liability issues arise; the chapter describes how the ORCA-Stance facilitates these responsibilities.
