ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 provides a review of effective interventions for justice-involved individuals with a substance use disorder. The chapter begins with a review of the extent of the problem, including the growth in opioid use disorder and the need to provide interventions tailored to justice-involved populations. Next, effective treatment strategies, such as cognitive behavioral interventions and contingency management, are discussed along with the importance of medically assisted treatment for some individuals. Recommendations are made for substance abuse screening and assessment tools and for working with individuals with co-occurring disorders. Finally, a review of drug courts and best practices for this model is included.
