ABSTRACT

This final chapter offers a summary of the main findings of the study. As it notes, the learners of Japanese, Korean and Mandarin languages had the most complete array of stereotypes of the target language countries. Notwithstanding, the learners of all Asian languages in this study had positive attitudes toward the target language country. Particular attention in this chapter is accorded to recapitulating the theoretical implications from adopting a Vygotskian concept of system of meaning for research on country stereotypes. It argues that linguistically saturated concepts of word meaning (znachenie slova) and word sense (smysl), which form part of the Vygotskian system of meaning, would not only be appealing to applied linguistics researchers but also would equip language educators with effective heuristic tools for the teaching of culture and developing deeper, richer and more encompassing meanings that their students attach to the target language country.
