ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the theory behind why a social ecological practice works rather than the specific skills that make it work. It provides a concise introduction to some of the most important things we know about patterns of resilience, the processes that make resilience possible, and how interventions that are more systemic tend to improve young people’s resilience. Aditya’s case plan is a good demonstration of how a social ecological approach to practice can be combined with other techniques for counseling, case management, and advocacy. The relationship between protective factors, protective processes, and positive outcomes is, though, curvilinear. This is critical to good case planning. One positive health-enhancing factor in a child’s life, like a non-delinquent peer group, is good.
