ABSTRACT

The family is an especially wonderful source for that magic when they are available and willing to help. Froma Walsh, the first scholar and author to describe the factors that contribute to the resilience of families, explained, when it comes to a traumatic event that threatens a family, each family member can influence how the family as a system responds. Francois is certainly one of the fortunate ones who is able to navigate to what he needs. Many children are far less resourced. It is estimated that at least two thirds of children needing mental health services do not receive them with Latino and uninsured youth being the most likely to be ignored by mental health care providers. Good counselors help young people and their families navigate through challenging environments by using ten skills that make it more likely young people find the resources they need to thrive.
