ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the meanings of discourse have been modified and extended in the works of Frosh and Parker. Frosh’s approach makes explicit use of Gee’s notion of discourse, coming closest to a linguistic discourse analysis among all the theorists discussed till now. In contrast, Parker’s understanding is more Foucauldian and Lacanian and therefore relatively conceptual and abstract. While both the psychologists have a critical, constructivist stance, relying on a conglomeration of critical theories, Frosh focusses more on gender, particularly masculinity, whereas Parker deals more with a critical analysis of the psy-complex through texts and discursive practices. Their approaches, aims and methodologies are explained and contrasted in detail in this chapter. At the end, a comparative summary of all the approaches is provided in a tabular format.
