ABSTRACT

In the summer of 1903 Magnus and Guorun Anna moved to Kolbeinslækur in Suoavík, the farm of his sister Vilhelmina Maria. Magnus was to work as a fisherman with Vilhelmina’s husband, who was a domineering and difficult man. By 1903 Magnus and his family had run out of options. Their poverty was crushing them. Under these circumstances, they decided to join the Salvation Army in Isafjorour, in the hope that this would help them make a better life for themselves. During this first decade of the 20th century, the relationship between Magnus and his life-partner Guorun appears to have been difficult, to say the least. In 1904 Guorun and Magnus applied for a residence permit from the Isafjorour town authorities. A few years later Magnus was at the end of his tether due to poverty and lack of opportunities; he was living at Skalavík, where no one would offer him a helping hand.
