ABSTRACT

The Association of Research Libraries has undertaken a major initiative called the North American Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (NAILDD) Project to improve the quality and cost effectiveness of interlibrary loan and document delivery. The genesis and overall scope of this initiative is described elsewhere in this volume. This chapter discusses issues of system architecture and technological infrastructure that will be needed to support the effort, with particular attention to those areas where organizational decisions will drive choices about architecture. It also covers some of the standards and interoperability problems that must be addressed to make the initiative a success.
