ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the questions examined by the book. It notes the tension between a popular history of opposition to planners and their activities (emphasising the role of citizen activism and radical change) with an approach based around institutions and policymaking. It identifies the usefulness of London’s Ringways proposals between 1965 and 1973 in testing this dichotomy. It then outlines the limited stock of existing historiography.
