ABSTRACT
This paper addresses the development and promulgation of the International Standard Serial Number, the relationship between the International Serials Data System and the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Serials, and emerging standards for serial holdings statements. The author discusses how these developments emerged at the national level here in the U.S. as well as internationally, and demonstrates how the national and international efforts converged to the mutual benefit of both arenas.
