ABSTRACT

Starting from the observation that certain serial titles nowadays, besides having an ISDS key-title, which already is a de facto uniform title, get an AACR2 uniform title as a heading, the necessity and usefulness of such uniform titles are questioned. The advantages and disadvantages of the different types of uniform titles are compared and evaluated, and are in particular contrasted with the traditional principle of corporate body main entry abandoned by AACR2. As a result, a return to author/title entry is recommended for all (generic) serial titles containing the name of the issuing body or needing to be supplemented by that name to be distinctive. The ISDS key-title should be kept as an additional element, but no other uniform titles should be created because they create more problems than they solve.
