ABSTRACT

Considerate conduct of business means doing the things does decently. Although democratic organisations can be established for very different purposes, can be designed and maintained very differently, and may conduct their business in different ways, they all have the intention to conduct their business decently. In business research it is well established that psychological and social characteristics as well as personal values and convictions have a crucial influence on people’s worldviews, attitudes, behaviour, decision-making, and acting. Worker cooperatives were among the first ‘green’ businesses, long before green was a trendy marketing term, because they actually cared about the safety and health of their workers and community. Participation in management – or participative management – ensures that all members’ commitment, knowledge, and ideas can feed into organisational decision-making, governance, and conduct of business. Traditional ecological knowledge and rooted membership are strong factors that can contribute to people demonstrating a pro-environmental orientation and behaviour.
