ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses another new issue Addis Ababa is facing that is worth discussing—the cultural dilution. This is an interesting social phenomenon that is brewing in the city. The issue is becoming a challenge for the city, perhaps for generations to come. With foreign schools or “academies” popping up everywhere and local private schools opening in abundance, parents are leaving the public schools in masses to enroll their children in these new private schools. This is troubling. The chapter discusses social effects of this and other issues such as khat (a locally grown stimulant plant) and shisha culture developing in the city that have been affecting the youth, the active labor force in Addis Ababa.
