ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 is all about condominiums, the new public housing scheme that is considered by many as the savior of the city from its housing problems. Public housing and multistory living are new concepts for Addis Ababa residents. However, condominium buildings are introducing people to a new way of life and at the same time a cultural shock. This chapter discusses the prospects and the many challenges of condominiums from a design, construction, and cultural-adaptation point of view. The problems discoursed in the chapter will follow with a discussion of some sustainable solutions to better design and build future public houses.
