ABSTRACT

Weather and climate information may of course constitute a number of separate items. The potential value of weather and climate information can be realized only as the flow of this information is made to affect decision-making. The presentation of weather and climate information is a highly specialized and an important form of communication; indeed, since weather and climate have a significant effect on many activities and businesses, a large number of people are called upon to make weather- and climate-sensitive decisions. The number of decision-makers interested in weather and climate information varies considerably in time and space. In assessing the value of weather and climate information, the concept of the ‘weather and climate package’ is useful. The satellite photographs used by the forecaster are taken over New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific, and provide the forecaster with information on the cloud structure, movement, development, and significance in terms of weather.
