ABSTRACT

ZEDfactory has suggested how to incorporate food production, water and energy management into the proposal for a holistic urban environment that solves emergency needs at high densities and turns into a low-density permanent city stable political conditions permit. Most methods of providing emergency and quick-to-erect housing rely too heavily on short-term materials and fail to balance the need for quick low-cost housing with basic levels of comfort. ZEDfactory and the Zero Bills Home Company have been developing a third way that maximises the benefits that emergency housing brings, while also using local labour, materials and renewable energy to create a long-term solution. Emergency housing proposed by ZEDfactory comes with the opportunity to customise the premises to suit the occupants. Energy will be provided across the site and to the dwellings and street lights by a raised solar power array centrally located to each dwelling cluster.
