ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to develop, formalise and maintain good client-designer relations which are the bedrock to successful design projects, where strong collaboration and mutual respect are fundamental to producing the best possible design solution to the problem. Depending on who the client is, the designer needs to tailor their method of working to offer an individualised service. The level of formality for the relationship needs to be assessed early on and the designer needs to gauge an appropriate level of formal versus informal communications. A client who is encouraged to be flexible in their thinking, who involves their end users, and who is confident to contribute and discuss ideas can help the team create unique solutions. Briefing is the start of the project, and identifies the project’s motivations. Briefing sessions are a crucial aspect of establishing a healthy and enduring client-designer relationship.
