ABSTRACT

In this introduction chapter, first, after highlighting the key points and emphases of the constructive-engagement strategy as one strategic goal and methodological strategy in cross-tradition engagement in philosophy, I introduce what this book is intended to do: I give a systematic explanation of the constructive-engagement strategy via its suggested constructive-engagement account of cross-tradition engagement in philosophy; in so doing, I explain why this research is needed and the connections that this research can contribute to in the current scholarship in philosophy. Second, in view of people’s relevant and reasonable pre-theoretic understandings, I introduce some preliminary conceptual and explanatory resources and their associated lexical distinctions, which are needed for the subsequent discussion. Third, I explain the organizational strategy and plan of this book and briefly introduce the basic contents of the subsequent chapters: besides this introduction chapter and the conclusion chapter, the main body of the book consists of two closely related and complementary parts: Part I, consisting of Chapters 1, 2, and 3 and focusing on theoretic exploration, and Part II, consisting of Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 and focusing on case analyses through the constructive-engagement strategy.
